Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral violence is a significant challenge in many democracies, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, where elections are often marred by violence, intimidation, and irregularities. In Yola North LGA, Adamawa State, electoral violence has been a recurring issue, undermining the credibility of the electoral process and discouraging voter participation. This study examines the impact of electoral violence on voter turnout in Yola North LGA, where instances of electoral violence have led to widespread fear and disillusionment among potential voters. Electoral violence, ranging from physical confrontations to the destruction of electoral materials, creates an atmosphere of insecurity that discourages citizens from exercising their democratic rights (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2023). The study will focus on the correlation between instances of violence and the subsequent voter turnout during elections in the area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral violence in Yola North LGA has had a profound impact on voter participation. The intimidating presence of violent actors, coupled with the fear of personal harm, has led to a significant reduction in voter turnout during elections. Despite efforts by government and civil society organizations to ensure peaceful elections, violence continues to affect the political process. This study aims to explore how electoral violence influences voter behavior and turnout, providing empirical evidence on the relationship between the two variables and highlighting the long-term effects of violence on electoral integrity.
